Nexus Electric in the Newspaper!

Nexus Electric was contact by the Meet your Merchant guru writer Jenny Goldsmith and asked to give an interview.  We met Ms. Goldsmith at an open house tour for Martis Camp where several of our clients homes that we had worked on were being featured.  When she asked what we did, she was fascinated and thought that it would make a good article. Being that the scope of our services is so diverse because we tailor our systems to our clients and their needs, my husband Jeremy and I were a little concerned how to articulate the full scope of what our business does in a quick interview.  I also had a little trepidation giving the interview with my 8 month old daughter Avery in attendance.  At 8 months, Avery requires a lot of attention.  Ms. Goldsmith made us feel at ease and asked us about all of our services which you can view on our services page.  She regaled at the stories our clients had told us about the unique Tahoe problems (including pipes bursting, etc) and our unique solutions using smart home technology.  I feel that Ms. Goldsmith did a wonderful job on the article and we are honored to be featured in our home town area (Lake Tahoe and Truckee). The article features Nexus’ business philosophy and how it customizes it’s systems to our clients daily lives and gives examples of some of our favorite problem solving scenarios.  You can find the article online, or in this weeks edition of the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza and the Sierra Sun Newspapers. Home Automation- A mother’s best friend

I’m a first time mother and I have a 5 month old baby. I have lived with a smart home for the last six years, and I appreciate. Though, I never truly appreciated it until my daughter arrived. As most parents will tell you parenthood sometimes requires having more than two hands, and being in more than one place at a time. Having an automated home (Smart Home) with a newborn is such a great help. I have listed the services that we currently have that keep me from going insane as a new mother. Monitoring- I can be sitting outside on my deck and monitor my daughter sleeping, or be in a complete different state and check in on her. Remote access to my monitoring service has allowed me to actually leave to go to my cousin’s wedding without feeling nervous or uncomfortable about leaving my daughter. Lights and Sound- Typically at 4:00am in the morning I am awake and feeding my daughter. My 20 year old stepson is quite the night owl, and typically gets in after 1:00am. I find that when I leave the dark bedroom with my newborn sometimes I am greeted to a house of bright lights left on from my step son’s wake. With my Control4 remote, I can check (from bed) which lights were left on and turn them off or dim them and turn the TV down (if my step son is still up and watching TV). At 4:00am, all I want is to be able to feed my baby and rock her to sleep as quickly as possible so that...

Is Your Home Collecting Data On you?

Based on an article on Connected Devices and Your Privacy from Consumer Reports Sure we love these products…but without security measures, these products can be your worst nightmare! Baby monitor Is your camera protected? In 2013 and 2014, the British press reported that sadistic hackers took over monitors to scream at sleeping children, and last fall officials in the U.K. warned that live feeds from baby monitors and home security cameras were accessible to the public on the Internet. All baby monitors that access the internet for you to view when your away or on your smart phone communicate directly with your home Wi-Fi network. Certain models can communicate directly with a phone using Bluetooth when you’re home. Parents need strong passwords on their home network and on the baby monitor itself for security. Blood glucose meter If you use a blood glucose meter at a hospital or doctor’s office, you are protected. Using a blood glucose meter at home is a completely different story. In a 2013 Privacy Rights Clearinghouse report analyzing 43 health and fitness apps, researchers found that very few encrypted their data. Thermostat Connected thermostats are like ordinary programmable thermostats that can do so much more, including saving you money by learning your home and away habits. In order to work, some smart thermostats need to track when you are home. Think of that information getting into the wrong hands! Coffeemaker…Really?! When you talk to your coffee maker from an app, your information becomes property of the coffeemaker and the app developer. Who cares, right? Well you may not feel so relaxed about sharing when you...

Vacation homes more susceptible to theft!

A Well Designed Security System Can Discourage Criminals I live in a small mountain town in Lake Tahoe called incline Village.  I love living in Incline Village because you can feel safe leaving your car running as you run into Starbucks, or 7-11 and have no fear that any harm will come to your car.  Recently, I was reminded that even small towns have big city concerns.  The Village Pharmacy was robbed at gunpoint.  The whole town was shocked by this event, and it reminded me why I am so passionate about setting up security systems for people.  Peace of mind is priceless. The market that I work in has a large number of second home owners and vacation homes.  Video surveillance is the perfect tool for protecting vacation homes.  Because they are unoccupied most of the time, vacation homes are more susceptible to break-ins, theft and vandalism.  A security camera system at your beach house or cabin can keep it safe when you’re not around.  With our security systems we can allow you to monitor your home from anywhere in the world, and from your computer or smart phone.  For more information on remote login and access and sensor and video surveillance please contact Nexus at...

Nest Thermostats just got a lot better!

Nest Partners with Control4 Home Automation At Nexus Electric and Smart Home, integrating thermostats with our custom home automation systems is one of the most requested functions from our clients.  Besides the obvious benefits of climate control, the convince of remotely accessing your heating systems with a phone app and conserving energy, integrating your HVAC system serves a much more important task behind the scenes. Our systems are programed to email the homeowner when something is wrong.  If your home becomes too “Cold” or “Hot” you will receive an email and a text that alerts you to the situation.  Here in the mountains, we have to worry about freezing pipes and the comfort and safety of elderly family members and pets.  Below I share a real world example of how our systems saved our clients from possible disaster. Now comes the “Nest” thermostats.  Their attractively designed, user friendly interface,  and great marketing made the a big hit fast.  We have begun getting several inquiries from our clients about using them in their homes.  While the Nest offered an app for remote access there were no other added benefits for our clients.  At the 2013 CEDIA event that all changed.  Nest announced they had opened there Software to home automation and had chose Control4 as a partner.  As a Control4 “Gold” dealer,  I couldn’t have been happier, I was now able to install the Nest thermostat our customers wanted and give them the added benefits they needed.  We are getting rave reviews from our clients that have the Nest Thermostats and they love the user interface we offer through Control4....

Home Invasion Facts…Are You Next?

Today I stumbled across some facts from SafeguardTheWorld.com about home intrusions A.K.A Burglaries.  What I found was eye opening!  No wonder we get more and more calls about video surveillance and security system packages! Burglary Facts Every 13 seconds a home intrusion happens. 2.5 million+ home intrusions are committed every year. Less than 17% of the homes in U.S. have any type of security system. Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the U.S. 1 out of 3 assaults are a result of a residential burglary. 85% of break-ins are from non-professionals…usually more desperate and dangerous. Insurance agencies can offer discounts up to 20% for auto insurance when a home security system is installed. Home security statistics tell us that 95% of break-ins needed some amount of force to break-in. Thieves prefer easy access, through an unlocked doors or windows. Home security statistics tell us that the type of tools used to break in are usually simple; a screwdriver, pliers, pries bars, and small hammers are most common. Police usually only solve 13% of all burglaries -due to lack of witnesses or physical evidence While these statistics are scary, home theft and intrusion is preventable with a good security system.  Contact Nexus at 775-721-0836 or Info@nexushome.com to inquire what options would be best for your...
